Sparklers:

Sparklers, like other fireworks, must be used with care. They can get six times as hot as a pan of cooking oil. It makes sense to keep sparklers in safe hands.

• Unsuitable for children under five
• Light one at a time
• Hold at arm’s length
• Wear gloves when holding sparklers
• Put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water

Before the display:

• Ensure your display area is free from hazards
• Do not tamper with fireworks
• Read the instructions in daylight
• Warn neighbours, especially the elderly and those with animals
• One person – clearly identified – should be responsible for the fireworks

Things you will need on the night:

• Torch for checking instructions
• Bucket of water or fire extinguisher
• Protective hat, eye protection and gloves
• First aid kit
• Bucket or large tray of soft earth or sand to stick fireworks in where required
• A board for flat bottomed fireworks
• Suitable supports for Catherine wheels
• Proper launchers for rockets

During the display:

• When outside the firework box should be covered with a tarpaulin or other spark proof sheet as one spark could ignite the whole lot
• Never smoke while handling, or near, fireworks
• Light fireworks at arm’s length with a taper or portfire
• Stand well back
• Never put fireworks in pockets
• Never go back to a lit firework
• Keep children under control

After the display:

• Soak non ignited fireworks in water for 24 hours prior to disposal
• Use gloves to collect spent fireworks
• Next morning check again and remove any firework debris
